Challenge for ‘Complete Removal’ of Urinary Stones Through the Synergy of Advanced Domestic Equipment and ‘Warm’ Medical Care

  • Director Jin-ho Hwang of Seoul On Urology introduces DYNE Medical’s ‘URUS·ClearPetra’ with proven outcomes
‘6 o’clock orientation’ accessibility as a new weapon… also enables lowering intrarenal pressure and securing clear visualization

[Medical News / Daily Medis] The recent rapid advancement of medical technology is going beyond assisting physicians’ techniques and is fundamentally changing the paradigm of treatment itself. In particular, the field of urinary stone treatment is rapidly expanding from the domain of “who performs the procedure” to the era of “what is used to perform it.”

Amid this trend, there is a clinic drawing attention by presenting a new standard in urology in the southwestern Seoul area by combining university hospital-level cutting-edge equipment with a sincere philosophy toward patients. The clinic is ‘Seoul On Urology.’

Director Jin-ho Hwang of Seoul On Urology Clinic (photo) recently introduced DYNE Medical Group’s domestically developed single-use flexible ureteroscope ‘URUS (hereinafter URUS)’ and suction-type ureteral access sheath ‘ClearPetra (hereinafter ClearPetra),’ thereby providing patients with a higher level of medical service. This publication met Director Hwang and heard about the background of adopting the equipment and the future of stone treatment he envisions.

First, the clinic name ‘On’ contains a dual meaning of the ‘warmth (溫)’ of medical staff who are sincere toward patients and the meaning of always being ‘On’ in treating disease. This is clearly reflected in the clinic’s system of performing emergency lithotripsy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and assigning dedicated nurses and emergency medical technicians.

Director Hwang explained,
“We aim to maintain the expertise that could only be experienced at university hospitals while staying by the patient’s side with warmth that is difficult to experience there. In particular, procedures that previously required two to three days of hospitalization have been implemented with minimally invasive methods to enable same-day discharge, allowing patients to return to daily life the next day.”

The reason he selected DYNE Medical Group’s products is also connected to this patient-centered philosophy of ‘safety’ and ‘efficiency.’ In a market situation where low-cost Chinese products are widespread, the innovation and reliability shown by products developed purely with domestic technology proved effective.

  • Evolution of RIRS, A New Era Opened by ‘URUS’ and ‘ClearPetra’

Director Hwang was convinced that the entry barrier for RIRS (flexible ureteroscopic kidney stone removal), a representative stone surgery method, has been dramatically lowered thanks to advanced equipment.

He said,
“In the past, RIRS was an area requiring highly advanced surgical skills, but now the advancement of equipment is shortening the learning curve of physicians. In particular, DYNE Medical Group’s ‘URUS’ is lightweight and provides excellent fine control, greatly reducing fatigue during surgery.”

What is noteworthy is the ‘6 o’clock orientation’ accessibility.

Director Hwang evaluated,
“When removing lower calyx stones that are difficult to access, unlike products in which instruments exit at the 3 or 9 o’clock direction, URUS, which enables exit at the 6 o’clock direction, becomes a powerful weapon for the operator.”

At the same time, he also expressed expectations for next-generation models of URUS.

In addition, combining it with ‘ClearPetra,’ which creates a negative pressure environment, elevates the completeness of surgery to its peak.

Director Hwang added,
“ClearPetra goes beyond the function of a passage, lowering intrarenal pressure and securing clear visualization. It also enables the suction of fine stone fragments (‘dust’) that could not be handled with conventional basket methods, making true ‘complete removal’ possible.”

The fast feedback and research and development willingness unique to domestic companies are also strengths.

He said,
“The virtuous cycle in which the opinions of medical staff are immediately reflected in new product development is a competitiveness that only domestic medical devices possess. I feel deep trust in terms of product completeness and after-sales management.”

  • “As Technology Advances, Ultimately What Matters Is the Perspective Toward People”

Meanwhile, Seoul On Urology Clinic plans to strengthen its manpower this year by additionally recruiting a director who is a former university hospital professor. This is to resolve chronic issues of university hospitals such as long waiting times and surgical delays and to provide optimal medical accessibility to local residents.

Director Hwang is also planning a research paper on new surgical methods using URUS and ClearPetra based on existing surgical data. He repeatedly expressed his willingness to return ‘the highest level of medical technology at the present time’ to the local community through continuous research and investment.

Concluding the interview, Director Hwang once again emphasized the value of ‘people.’

“As medical technology advances, it becomes more important to view patients not as ‘cases’ but as individual ‘people.’ While equipping ourselves with the best equipment, we will continue to build a hospital where warmth toward people always flows at its center.”
